Samhain marks the final harvest before the coming of Winter. We reflect on our Path and how we wish to proceed – usually by cutting away whatever is no longer needed. As the freeze begins, we must make room to store the things we can use instead of the things that weigh us down. They will only get heavier if we hold on to them through the Winter.
You can make a ritual of this by following the tradition of lighting a bonfire. Write down the things you wish to let go of, then throw them in the fire to purify and release them from your life.
We also reach further back and feel a stronger connection with our ancestors and those who have passed on. The spirit world and the physical world are deeply connected during this liminal time. Visiting cemeteries, preparing a meal for those on the other side, and creating a shrine or altar to one’s ancestors are all common practice to honor those who came before and support us from the spirit world.
This connection to the spirit world also heightens powers of divination and deepens your connection with the Divine. You may choose to set aside time to meditate with a particular God or Goddess or the Universe as a whole. Be prepared for psychic insights, and pull out your runes, pendulum, or tarot cards if you are so inclined.
You may be wondering how Halloween fits in with Samhain. Long ago, the holidays of Samhain (October 31st), All Saints’ Day (or All Hallows, on November 1st), and All Souls’ Day (November 2nd) combined over time to become what we now call Hallowe’en. This three day period is also known as Hallowtide in the Western Christian tradition.
All of these observances focus on the thinning of the veil between the spirit world and the material, as well as commemorating the dead. No matter how you look at it, this is a magickal time of year we are pleased to share with you.
Blessings!

Halloween is only a day away! Here are more free tricks (and treats) from Master Plutocraft:
This is the perfect time to summon spirits and also honor your ancestors. A traditional way to do this is to collect graveyard dirt from a loved one’s grave or that of a good spirit or holy person. The dirt should be placed in a sacred dish or box and left on an ancestral altar to be used as protection at the threshold of front and back doorways in your home.
To enhance this protection, combine the graveyard dirt with sea salt, Dragon’s Blood resin, and red brick dust. Sprinkle at the threshold.
You can also tap into Animal Spirit Magick with a spirit animal altar. If you have the ashes of a beloved pet or their graveyard dirt, you can use this in the same way.
Graveyard dirt is not limited to protection. It can be used for both positive and negative magick.
More uses for graveyard dirt:
- Communication with the dead/summoning. Burn Dittany of Crete for aid in sight and spirit manifestation.
- Love Spells
- Banishing
- Causing unnatural illness to enemies (if the dirt is taken from the grave of a criminal or a person that was bad in life).
- Portal/Vortex Magick
- Astral Projection
IMPORTANT: When you collect graveyard dirt, always be respectful and leave an offering of food, liquor (usually whiskey) or coins.
When you cross the threshold or cemetery gates, always leave coins at the entrance to pay the gatekeepers.
Good luck with your Halloween magick!

The Sabbat is only a week away, and we want to celebrate with you!
Here’s a free recipe from Pluto for an all-purpose, high power cleansing spray. You can spray it around your house and even on your skin whenever you need some fast, deep cleansing.
Cleansing Spray Recipe:
- Mix equal parts Rue water, Florida water, Holy water, and spring water in an empty spray bottle.
- Add a piece of quartz crystal or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can break a quartz crystal into shards with a hammer (just be careful!).
- Place the crystal (whole or in shards) in the bottle with a teaspoon of Sea Salt and shake well.
- Leave the bottle in a window or outside in the light of the moon to charge overnight.
This works best on the Full Moon, though you can also let it charge from sunset on Hallowe’en through sunset on November 1st to harness this holiday’s energies of cleansing and protection.
All Hallow’s Eve
This is the time to harvest the fruits of your labor, let go of those things that no longer serve you, and honor those who have passed on. As you probably know, the Veil between the physical world and spiritual world is thin on Hallowe’en, so it is traditional to leave an offering for your ancestors on your altar or doorstep. Common offerings are bread and a small bowl of Florida Water or wine. You can even invite their spirits to eat with you in the evening time.
Halloween is also a time of magick and divination for the coming year. Pull out your tarot cards and your candles, and celebrate the turning of the seasons with joy and blessings for yourself and your loved ones on both sides of the Veil.
May you know peace and wisdom this Halloween season.
